Here it is, the trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey…the first half of Peter Jackson’s telling of Tolkien’s “prequel” to the Lord of the Rings.
Ok, don’t get me wrong. I like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, though a “Ringer” I am not. If I had to pick a fantasy epic to find its way to film, it would be the Stephen R. Donaldson series The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. But I think maybe twenty people would go to watch that deconstruction of the fantasy form so this is why I don’t make movies.
I do have the extended version of The Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray, maybe not surprisingly, because of the monsters. Peter Jackson certainly knows his creatures. Cave trolls to Balrogs to Witch Kings to Sauron himself (both in his physical embodiment and as “The Eye”), Jackson (and, really, WETA) conjured Tolkien’s monsters in all their terrifying glory.
The monster effects have kept me coming back even if the literally epic seriousness of the whole affair made me want to snicker. So, what I’m really looking forward to is the second part of the Hobbit…and Smaug….
And yes, I do wish Guillermo del Toro helmed this one. Talk about someone knowing their monsters.
Finale of American Horror Story tomorrow night. Until then…
